Minimum Safety Requirements for Ammonia Refrigeration Analysis

GCAP is excited to officially offer our newest compliance and safety service.  Do you operate/manage a facility that uses NH3 as a refrigerant, but don’t have enough on hand to be regulated under PSM/RMP? If so, do you meet minimum compliance needs.  Our goal is for your system to be safe and compliance no matter the amount of anhydrous on-site.  IIAR recommends that each facility that uses ammonia as a refrigerant but having less than 10,000 lbs on site have a “general duty” aka “minimum safety analysis” done every 5 years.  Even if your system is over 10,000 lbs, this evaluation will be a great start to look into minimum best practices expected to find implemented in any and all industrial ammonia refrigeration systems regardless of age and location.

The evaluation itself consists of the following activities:

  • Extensive review of general duty and best practice  documentation and implementation
  • Interviews with operating staff, maintenance staff, and management
  • Walkthroughs of the refrigeration system – Physical inspections of operating unit equipment and observations of certain activities that happened to occur during the onsite period of the audit were conducted.
  • A full detailed official report of the analysis and any recommendation to improve safety and/or compliance
